Occupational Therapy & Vocational Rehabilitation Services

Services for Government Agencies

We have been proud to provide occupational therapy services to the federal and provincial government departments since 2006. We are on the standing offer list to provide occupational therapy services to the Public Service Commission employees of Nova Scotia. We have provided ergonomic assessments to employees in multiple federal government departments. We were the successful candidate to provide occupational therapy services for First Nations and Inuit Health and the Halifax District Veteran's Affairs Office.

Ergonomic Assessment

An employee’s work methods or workstation set-up can often be the hidden factor when it comes to unexplained pain or discomfort. An ergonomic assessment could mean the difference between having an employee at work - or having an employee on disability.  When conducting an ergonomic assessment, our goal is to either keep a worker on the job by decreasing their discomfort, or bring a worker back to the workplace with a reduced risk of re-injury or strain through ergonomic enhancements or adjustments in their work methods or workstation.

Depending on your needs, an ergonomic assessment can also include a physical or cognitive demands analysis of the employee’s work site.

Job Site Analysis (JSA)

This is an essential tool for the return to work process as it is used to match a person's functional abilities for a specific position. It includes an objective analysis of the essential job tasks and physical demands of the worker's pre-disability or current position. The report is based on observations of the worksite, other employees performing the duties as well as interviews with the injured/disabled worker and/or supervisor.

Cognitive Demands Analysis (CDA)

Employees may have difficulties meeting or coping with the cognitive demands of their job.  This may be due to a wide variety of issues including depression, PTSD, chronic pain, TBI, stress, or mental health issues.

A CDA is an objective analysis of the essential job duties and cognitive demands of an employee’s job. Areas assessed include the amount of concentration required, the demands on memory and time pressures.  It is based on observations of the worksite, other employees performing the duties and/or interviewing the employee and/or supervisor. A CDA can be useful:
• To assist in keeping the employee in the workplace and preventing disability
• For return to work planning and job accommodation.
• If the employee is being sent for an IME with a psychologist or psychiatrist.

Recommendations from the report can include further rehabilitation recommendations with specific intervention or treatment providers, or workplace accommodations for the employee. We tailor the report to meet your needs. For example, the report may be kept generic or it can be pertaining to a specific employee. This is useful when combined with the cognitive screen when addressing a specific employee’s issues.

Cognitive Screening

The cognitive screen is used to assist in identifying whether an individual may have cognitive deficits which are impacting their daily functioning. Our therapists utilize standardized and non standardized assessment tools to assess areas including; memory, concentration and higher level cognitive abilities such as problem solving. The cognitive screen is not diagnostic in nature and does not replace a neuropsychological assessment. It may be used in combination with the Cognitive Demands Analysis (CDA) to ensure the employee has the cognitive abilities to perform the essential duties of their job. If requested by the account, recommendations can be made regarding remedial strategies and/or job accommodations. This service is useful not only for employees with traumatic brain injuries but also with employees with mental health issues, chronic pain and some neurological conditions.

Workplace Wellness

We have extensive experience helping companies address human resource and occupational health and safety issues such as:
• Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)
• Workstation set-up
• Time management
• Stress management
• Employee wellness solutions including group fitness activities
• Healthy living education
• Back care education

Attendance Management

Employee sick time is a huge cost to employers and absenteeism is on the rise. We work with private companies to develop and implement attendance management programs. We may work with the employee on a collaborative basis to discuss the issues which are leading to the absenteeism and work with the employee to develop strategies to address these issues. This may involve communication with the employee’s physicians or treatment providers to obtain medical restrictions regarding the employee’s ability to perform their essential job duties.  Once these medical restrictions are known, options for workplace accommodations can be discussed with the employer with a goal of keeping the employee at work.
