Services for Insurers
Our company has been pleased to provide services to various insurance companies including Motor Vehicle Insurance and Long Term Disability Insurance carriers. Therefore, we have a thorough understanding of the unique challenges facing insurers including the rising incidence of disability. We provide timely services with a return to work focus to address physical and/or mental causes of disability. We take a common sense approach to assist clients to reach their maximal functional level.
Complex Case Management/Disability Management Counselling
Studies have shown that companies who use disability management consulting services are three times more successful in returning clients back to the workplace following injury or illness (Watson Wyatt Work Study).
Our goal is the same as yours — to get injured or ill clients healthy and back to the workplace while ensuring they receive the most appropriate and cost-effective treatment methods available.
We meet with the client’s treatment providers to coordinate treatment plans that help meet our shared goal. Case Management/Disability Management Counselling helps to enhance your cost management while offering the support and encouragement clients need to increase their potential for recovery.
We will tailor our intervention to meet your needs, whether it’s meeting with the client, meeting with the Family Physician and/or meeting with their rehabilitation treatment providers.
Transferable Skills Analysis (TSA)
Sometimes clients are not able to return to their original vocation after injury or disability. A TSA assessment can help identify potentially appropriate alternate occupations based on the individual’s training, vocational experience and education. An analysis of the client’s return to work potential is based on the National Occupational Classification of Occupations (NOC) and is, therefore, non-biased and helps identify potentially appropriate occupations.
Employability Assessment
For clients who are unable to return to their pre-injury occupation and with a limited vocational history, an employability assessment can be used to identify appropriate vocational options most suited to the client's training, education, work history, experience, interests and physical or functional restrictions. Similar to the Transferable Skills Analysis (TSA) but takes into consideration other factors such as an client’s interests and avocational activities.
Vocational Counselling
Often, clients who are unable to return to their pre-disability or pre-injury occupation require assistance to identify vocational interests and with career exploration. Our therapists work with the client to help identify vocational strengths/skills in order to develop vocational goals. The client’s physical and mental status are taken into consideration during this process. This is a particularly beneficial service when preparing a client for the change of definition date.
Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE)
Harbourside Rehab is pleased to partner with Mr. Lloyd Ricahrd, O.T. and Kinesiologist, to offer the Matheson FCE. The Matheson FCE protocol utilizes evaluation tools that are widely accepted in the industrial rehabilitation field, have been court tested, and have published peer reviewed reliability and validity studies. The Matheson FCE protocol follows the "Hierarchy for Industrial Rehabilitation" which details that each assessment must address the hierarchical components of: Safety (i.e. testing must not lead to injury), Reliability (i.e. dependable test results; physical effort testing), Validity (i.e. tests used must measure what is intended to be measured and must predict or reflect performance of a task), Practicality (i.e. reasonable test costs) and Utility (testing must meet needs of all parties). The evaluation is completed over an 8 hour day and is designed to replicate the work tolerance requirements of many occupations. The goal of the FCE is to collect reliable information above the client's current abilities and limitations, estimate their potential vocational status and provide succinct recommendations to ultimately assist in resolving the needs of the file. The FCE is particularly valuable when requesting a TSA to ensure accurate assessment of the clients abilities.

Ergonomic Assessment
An employee’s work methods or workstation set-up can often be the hidden factor when it comes to unexplained pain or discomfort. An ergonomic assessment could mean the difference between having an employee at work - or having an employee on disability. When conducting an ergonomic assessment, our goal is to either keep a worker on the job by decreasing their discomfort, or bring a worker back to the workplace with a reduced risk of re-injury or strain through ergonomic enhancements or adjustments in their work methods or workstation.
Depending on your needs, an ergonomic assessment can also include a physical or cognitive demands analysis of the employee’s work site.

Job Site Analysis (JSA)
This is an essential tool for the return to work process as it is used to match a person's functional abilities for a specific position. It includes an objective analysis of the essential job tasks and physical demands of the worker's pre-disability or current position. The report is based on observations of the worksite, other employees performing the duties as well as interviews with the injured/disabled worker and/or supervisor.

Cognitive Demands Analysis (CDA)
A CDA is an objective analysis of the essential job duties and cognitive demands of an client’s job. Areas assessed include the amount of concentration required, the demands on memory and time pressures. It is based on observations of the worksite, other clients performing the duties and/or interviewing the client and/or supervisor. A CDA can be useful: • For return to work planning and job accommodation. • If the client is being sent for an IME with a psychologist or psychiatrist. • When working with clients with diagnoses such as depression, PTSD, chronic pain, TBI, stress, or mental health issues.
Can be used in conjunction with the cognitive screening, as described below. Recommendations from the report can include further rehabilitation recommendations with specific intervention or treatment providers, or workplace accommodations for the client.
Cognitive Screening
The cognitive screen is used to assist in identifying whether a client may have cognitive deficits which are impacting their daily functioning. Our therapists utilize standardized and non standardized assessment tools to assess areas including; memory, concentration and higher level cognitive abilities such as problem solving. The cognitive screen is not diagnostic in nature and does not replace a neuropsychological assessment. It may be used in combination with the Cognitive Demands Analysis (CDA) to ensure the client has the cognitive abilities to perform the essential duties of their job. If requested by the account, recommendations can be made regarding remedial strategies and/or job accommodations. This service is useful not only for clients with traumatic brain injuries but also with clients who have mental health issues, chronic pain and some neurological conditions.
Cognitive Rehabilitation Services
Our therapists offer a variety of services aimed at addressing the cognitive, emotional and behavioural issues often experienced after injuries such traumatic brain injuries or with conditions such as strokes or mental health issues. Activity Re-activation
Often clients who are off work are not engaged in their normal pre-injury/pre-disability activities and they lack structure to their day. This may be related to a variety of conditions such as chronic pain or mental health issues. Our highly skilled team can provide guidance to clients in the areas of activity scheduling with the goal of gradually improving their daily functioning. Strategies such as goal setting, stress management techniques, time management, relaxation techniques are utilized in a self management approach. The services are delivered on a one-on-one basis. This is excellent to assist the individual to prepare for an eventual return to work.
Pain Management
Clients living with ongoing pain often avoid activities due to fear of increasing their pain. Pain Management Counselling is offered by occupational therapists who have experience working with clients with ongoing pain. With the goal of increasing a person’s activity level. The occupational therapist will make recommendations for appropriate interventions that may include: • Further occupational therapy sessions aimed at increasing a person’s functional and activity level as well as educating the individual on different coping strategies. • Participation in the Progressive Goal Attainment Program (PGAP), which is a structured program designed to increase a person’s activity level. We have therapists who have the necessary training to conduct the program. • A referral to a psychologist if cognitive issues need to be addressed in greater depth. • A referral to another health professional, such as a physiotherapist, if further physical rehabilitation is warranted.
